Suchness 2012

Suchness can be characterized by saying that no individual moment is completely identical. Specifically in Zen Buddhism, Suchness is often understood as that moment or that the whole of life is brief. “We recognize that reality is wondrously beautiful but also that its patterns are fragile and passing." - Michael Molloy, Professor of Religion

With my interest in creating and projecting motion, I digitally manipulate a photograph of a flower. I break down and separate its various parts and then bring them all back together to generate a fabricated process of the flower’s transient presence. The life of a flower, just as the rest of nature and the manmade, come in and out of existence. They are subject to varying environments and measures of time and, ultimately, their life is temporary. The projected passing patterns accelerate and require a level of focus in order to catch the sudden actions and brief states of change.
