Impede II 2014

Allan Kaprow spoke of a “concrete art” made from transient everyday materials, so I took concrete blocks and laid them out on the floor of my studio. I used a projector to illuminate them, causing their shadows to be visible on the wall. I then manipulated a photograph of a concrete block in order to mimic a shadow and from there animated it. The image projects and rests in a stationary position amidst the other shadows giving the illusion that something physical is actually there. It then comes to life and moves about, crawling, bumping into and hopping over the obstructions that interrupt its path.

The animated shadow navigates the space; unsure of its next move, testing, and seemingly learning how to scale the hurdles it comes up against. Through gesture, we read the animated shadow’s behavior as sentient and experience it as something we can relate to.
